Saying that today was weird would be the understatement of the century. He’d endured some freaky things at the past at the hands of so-called friends, but this was by far the most of there.

Alex growled, getting increasing frustrated with his current situation. Not once had he ever needed to swim; when he was thrown into the water a few times by a helicopter, he quickly got the hell out. He was heavy thanks to his biomass, and sinking like a rock to the bottom of the ocean was not on his to do list.

Learning to swim? Easy for a normal human with legs. Only having one, long limb with fins was probably not the most ideal way to do this. Oh well, that’s what he had to deal with… and he’d deal. Unless he went insane because HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO THIS!?

He gracelessly swam as close to the surface as possible, looking through the water at the world above. This was so unfair…

Aelita happened to be passing by with her two sons, they were as incognito as possible. She held onto Daun’s hand as he began to trot forward, Santana was in her arms, holding onto her neck.

Daun was about to ask if they could go for food, when something caught his eye. The small boy looked over to the man… Fishy!

“Mommy can I have that fishy?” He pointed to the poor evolved, a huge grin on his face.

“Fishy?” Aelita raised a brow, then looked at Alex. Oh shit. “Dad?” She called out, hurrying over with Daun.

“What the heck?”

Alex wanted to curl up and die. Of all the people to stumble upon him like this… why his daughter? If there was a God, he obviously hated him. That, or this was karma finally coming to bite him in the ass.

He slowly lifted a hand out of the water, waving.

“What happened?” She said, Daun walked over and stared at the man in the eye. A smile plastered on his little face, he had the same eyes as his mother.

He lifted a brow, moving his face away to give her a look. “A hive? Why would anyone want to live in one of those dumps? I mean, ah… yours is probably decent?” He corrected himself awkwardly.

He’d only ever been inside one hive… and they weren’t very homely feeling.

“It’s… very homey.” She let him go, giving him a look. As if she’d live in a dumpy hive. She was resourceful, thankfully. She stood up, helping Alex to his feet as she stood.

Alex dusted himself off, sighing. “Alright, take me. I’d like to see.” He smiled, gesturing her to lead the way. Always good to know where another hideout was located, especially if one had friendly company.

Aelita nodded, the trek to her hive wasn’t a long one at all. She got them there in a span of 15 minutes. “Here we are.” She said, before climbing up to the roof top.

Lili sat on the roof of their hive, she was playing with one of the many kittens they had running around in the hive. She was singing an off version of twinkle twinkle little star, the small kitten squirmed in her lap.

Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky. When the blazing sun is gone, when the nothing shines above. Then you show your little light, twinkle twinkle all the night.”

Alex laughed quietly, closing his own eyes and shaking his head. Of all the unexpected things that could’ve possibly happened to him… he never even imagined this would be one of them.

“This has been… a very strange day. Not a bad day, just… strange.”

“Strange… strange is a good word for it.” She wiped her eyes, laughing with him. She fell silent for a good moment, unsure of what else she could possibly say to him, then spoke.

“I live around here, in one of the hives.”

She didn’t know what to expect. She didn’t expect this of all things. A hug… he hugged her? He accepted her? A test tube child who had no real purpose? Why? She didn’t know, she honestly didn’t know why.

But she didn’t care. She gently began to pet her father’s head, crying silently with him. It felt hard to breathe, a sob choked up in her throat. Aelita gently rocked back in forth, holding Alex close. She finally had someone. A dad.

“Don’t cry…” She sniffled, her emotions whirling around like a hurricane. “Don’t cry daddy…” She wondered if he’d let her call him daddy, she’d like that. She really would.

This was probably the most open he’s ever been with anyone; not even Dana had seen him cry. It was a relief to just let everything out, and to have someone there to keep you grounded.

Alex calmed his breathing, shifting his legs so he could sit up a little straighter. He released his death grip on her, moving so that he had his forehead resting on her own. He smiled softly, bringing his hands up to cup her cheeks, using his thumbs to wipe away her tears. She called him daddy… well, alright then. He’d be a father- he’d couldn’t say he’d be the best or the most sympathetic… but he would try. For her.

“Don’t cry, not for me… I’m not worth crying for.”

Aelita closed her eyes for a moment, brushing the fresh tears from her eyes. She opened them again, focusing on him. She shook her head, and spoke.

“Of course you are…you are my daddy after all.”

She smiled, she breathed in shakily and nodded. With a gulp, she allowed herself to look him in the eye. They were family alright, it was impossible to deny it.

Alex laughed quietly, closing his own eyes and shaking his head. Of all the unexpected things that could’ve possibly happened to him… he never even imagined this would be one of them.

She frowns. “…You look sick still.” She reached out and felt his cheeks.

“I-I’m not sick I’m— Ugh..

He pushed her hand away, grumbling.

She had a slightly hurt expression, but masked it and lowered her hand.

“…What could it be I wonder?”

“I’d rather.. not say.”

“You can tell me anything you know, but okay.”
